Healthy Marriage Meetup Notes – 3/20/22
Topic 3/20/22: Expectations and Purpose of Marriage
NOTES:
– SCRIPTURE GENESIS 2:15-25
– GOD PROVIDED MARRIAGE AS A MEANS FOR COMPANIONSHIP
– If Adam was lacking companionship in a perfect world, how much more can we use companionship in a broken world
– Companionship is not a transactional partnership but an intimate friendship; God gave Adam a helper to meet an emotional need, not a functional one
– God sees Adam’s need and did not want him to be left ALONE and that is a powerful example of real love; God sees and seeks to meet each other’s needs
– Loneliness and unhappiness is not God’s intended purpose for marriage – especially when your spouse is meant to be a helper and companion
– Helper is the same term that is often used to describe who God is to His people
– We should actively consider how can we be a blessing to our spouse
TAKEAWAY HOMEWORK – WRITE AND DISCUSS WITH YOUR SPOUSE:
What ways can your spouse help you to not feel lonely or lacking? What areas could your spouse be a better companion, helper?
GUIDELINES FOR DISCUSSION:
– Work on explaining the emotional void/need? For example – I need this because it makes me feel safe and protected.
– Work to listen and fulfill – Understand we are following God’s example of seeing needs and seeking to fulfill needs
– Recognize and appreciate when needs are being fulfilled
